1920's Revisited!

This  facility was used by the school  band to hold their weekly Saturday night  concerts for the public.  Word has it that the structure was torn down   when the new school was built in 1928.

We are closing in on 100 years since this little Band Stand  was part of the landscape and  today remains  a special  and significant  part of the  history  of  “Washington Square”& Steamboat Rock.

The landscape of Washington Square has had many changes thru the years  since the 1920's.  In 2013  the “Visionary Group”  took on as their project to transform “ Washington Square”  into a “Park” like setting. Phase one of the project  was completed in June of 2014 with the installation  of”state  of the art “  playground equipment.  We move forward to Phase  two which will be  the addition  of a Shelter House  to include features that will add to its uniqueness and superiority .

All great projects  come with a price. Phase 2  of the Washington Square Project Park (Shelter)  is no exception. It would be great if this shelter could be available for  family picnics  the summer of  2015.  It can be  but we need your help.   Please   consider  sending a donation to fund this project .   All donations are tax deductible.. Please make your checks  payable to &  mail to :

RAGBRAI Is Coming To Steamboat Rock

Wednesday Morning July 22nd...

Welcome All!

Watch our web-site as we update you on all the events, and activities we will be offering during your visit to the “ Valley of Friendliness”.    We have a unique history, area beauty and recreational opportunities for you to explore.  Please come back often to see what we have to offer!

MANY  YEARS AGO  this “Band Stand” stood on

“Washington Square”

Steamboat Rock Welcomes RAGBRAI!

On Wednesday, July 22, RAGBRAI riders and support personnel will wind their way into the Valley of Friendliness. Steamboat Rock is a town of around 300 nestled along the banks of the Iowa River. The Iowa River Greenbelt beckons campers, hikers, tubers, shooters, hunters, fishermen, and nature lovers all year round to this beautiful area.

The town is gearing up for your visit and is planning to provide entertainment, restrooms, water and food. There may be an opportunity to kiss the Steamboat rock! The firemen will be serving Chris Cakes, the Presbyterian Church will offer a food item, the Saddle Club will be involved, and the Visionary Group will be selling items in order to raise money for our community’s first park shelter house.

Please stop by and say hello and enjoy a warm Valley of Friendliness welcome! We hope your visit to our community is a memorable one and that you have high temps in the 70s, sunny skies and a westerly wind!

Bob Hutchcroft and Marcia Frerichs, Janice Kramer, Jenny Smith, Pastor Bruce Baillie.
